Some sessions feel extra special because of the story behind them, and Shelby + Joe’s engagement session is one of those.
These two have been together for six years, and their love story began in such a meaningful place—while both working as youth counselors at St. Joseph’s Home for Children. Shelby admitted she was the one to take the first step, asking for Joe’s number after enjoying their conversations at work (and noticing how handsome he was!). Their first date was at Town Hall Tap, and from there, their connection only grew.
It’s easy to see how much they enjoy life together. They love being outdoors—camping, hiking trails, exploring state parks, and soaking up all the beauty Minnesota has to offer. They’re also big animal lovers, sharing their home with their cat, PJ, while still holding close the memory of their sweet dog, Millie. Between adventures, movie nights, and home projects, it’s clear they simply love doing life side by side.
Minnesota will always be home, and the North Shore holds an especially deep place in their hearts. Each September they take a trip to Duluth, Lutsen, and Grand Marais to enjoy the fall colors and peacefulness of the lake. It was no surprise that Joe chose the North Shore for his proposal—one that was thoughtful, heartfelt, and full of meaning. He wrote letters for Shelby and read them aloud at the places that shaped their story—the place they met, their first date spot, their first apartment—and then finally at Palisade Head overlooking Lake Superior, where he asked her to marry him. Of course, she said yes!
Capturing these two together was such a joy. The way they laugh, the way Joe looks at Shelby, the way their story has been built on years of adventure and intention—it all shines through in their photos.
Shelby + Joe, your love story is so beautiful, and I am so excited for all that’s ahead as you plan your wedding and continue your journey together.
